My 5-year-old son, Marcus, continues to amaze me with his regular, compact doses of wisdom. I asked him to name his best friends. It went something like this:
Me: “Marcus, who are your best friends?”
Marcus: “Mama, Daddy, Vinny (our dog), Queso (our other dog), and myself!”
I didn’t expect the last part of the list. When I asked if he’s his own best friend, he looked at me like I was crazy when he responded with ‘Yes’ – why wouldn’t he be his own best friend? Silly me.
Then he asked me to list my best friends…
Me: “Marcus, Daddy, Vinny, and Queso”
Marcus: “You forgot yourself!”
This exercise has become a daily ritual for our family and has expanded to include all the people we love and appreciate. At the end of what usually ends up being a very long list, Marcus is not satisfied until we include ourselves as our own best friends.
It is easy to neglect one of the most important relationships we will ever have…the relationship we have with ourselves. I am grateful for the reminder.
