Adult Rescue Kit

person-looking-searching-clean

A day like any other. I’m pushing through my daily to-do’s, while chugging my twice reheated coffee, running around like a hot mess. Commuting, daycare pick-up/drop-off, tax returns, laundry, dishes, groceries, holidays, laundry, birthday parties, cleaning, never ending meetings at work, laundry, muffin top, and random sprouts of gray hair, ahhhhh. Then it dawned on me as I was looking for the best deals on appliances, I’m adulting too hard. So hard that the idea of doing something just for fun sounds weird and foreign.

Adulting can seriously be so rough at times. The list of responsibilities is never ending.  And what happens when you adult too hard, the grumpiness sets in. Yep, I just called you out.  It’s as if you are going through the motions of life, without having a moment to stop and enjoy something for yourself.

But here’s the good news… We are all in the same boat. Adulting is a phase of life; the greater phase of life that is. So when you realize the irritable adulting bug has bit, here is your rescue kit:

1. Night out with the friends

We are all guilty of letting life’s crazy schedule get in the way of spending quality time with the people we love. The infamous “we need to do this more often” phrase is thrown out every time. But deep down, everyone knows it’s not going to happen anytime soon. So, the next time you’re feeling stressed and tired, pick up that phone and schedule some free therapy with your friends.

2. Get some fresh air

Sometimes the only way to get out of your own head, is to step outside and see the bigger picture. Go on a walk, hike a mountain, ride your bike, go to the park, etc. Whatever you choose to do, you will interrupt whatever negative thoughts/stress you have going on.

3. Pamper yourself

Treat yourself, whether it’s a DIY spa day at home or at an actual spa. It will help you feel rejuvenated and relaxed. And men, this is for you too. If you want to get out of the house, but you’re not rolling in the dough – check out frequent deals found on Groupon.

4. Day trip/staycation

Removing yourself from the usual routine will hit the reset button on your adult life. Explore your city, pretend to be an obnoxious tourist, stay at a local bed and breakfast, keep it lighthearted and have fun. One word to sum up your mini vacay—frolic (send your pics ;))

5. Retail therapy

Buy your sanity back with a fun purchase when you’re having a tough adult day. Stay clear of Target, it’s a dangerous trap! We know from experience. If you’re on a budget, but want to pretend you’re not, sneak into your local consignment shop.

6. Date night

If you have a significant other, it’s important to spend time with each other. Shake things up by doing something together that you’ve never done before. Take the initiative to surprise him/her with a memorable experience. And if you are happily single, call up a friend for a spontaneous adventure.

Life is busy and unpredictable, so be sure to take a moment to notice all the zest around you. It will refuel your tank.
